Sion shock leaves Galatasaray cold

Sion pulled off one of shocks of the round with a thrilling success against Galatasaray. The hosts raced into a two-goal inside ten minutes as headers by Alvaro José Dominguez (7) and Vilmos Vanczák (10) stunned the visitors. Two goals soon became three as Jamel Alioui scored with a deflected shot just past the half-hour. Galatasaray got back into the match six minutes before half-time through Lincoln before Tobias Linderoth made it 3-2 from the edge of the area (66) to set up an exciting return leg in Turkey.

FC Artmedia Petržalka 1-2 Panathinaikos FC
Artmedia surrendered a one-goal advantage and finished with ten men as Panathinaikos seized the initiative in Slovakia. The hosts opened the scoring through Juraj Halenár two minutes after half-time, only for Dimitris Papadopoulos to level matters from the penalty spot shortly after the hour. In a frantic finish, Dame N'Doye handed the Greek giants the lead and Balász Borbély was sent off as the evening turned sour for Artmedia.

Getafe CF 1-0 FC Twente
Getafe marked their UEFA Cup debut with a win thanks to a last-gasp strike by Ikechukwu Uche. Michael Laudrup's side struggled to make an impact against their Dutch visitors, who were reduced to ten men when defender Edson Braafheid was given his marching orders with just over an hour gone. Buoyed by their superior numbers the hosts ventured forward more in the latter stages of the game but will consider themselves lucky to have scored so late on.

Tampere United 2-3 FC Girondins de Bordeaux
Added-time goals by Fernando Cavenaghi and Johan Micoud helped Bordeaux complete a dramatic comeback at Tampere. The hosts took a seventh-minute lead through Jarkko Wiss and held on until Cavenaghi equalised from close range shortly after half-time. Tampere again took the lead when Tomi Petrescu scored on 69 minutes with a spectacular 25-metre strike and the Finnish champions looked destined to win until Micoud levelled in the second minute of added time. Cavenaghi then grabbed the unlikely winner seconds before the final whistle.

AC Sparta Praha 0-0 Odense BK
Sparta suffered more frustration on the European scene as they were held to a goalless draw by Odense in Prague. After losing 5-0 on aggregate to Arsenal FC in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, the Czech double winners misfired again against stubborn Danish opponents. Without suspended duo Marek Kulič and Luboš Hušek, the hosts lacked bite and when they did carve openings Libor Došek failed to convert. The striker rifled the first of his two opportunities over, then shot wide with only goalkeeper Arkadiusz Onyszko to beat.

FC Midtjylland 1-3 FC Lokomotiv Moskva
Lokomotiv Moskva are well placed to qualify for the group stage after coming from behind to see off Midtjylland. Baba Collins opened the scoring for the Danish league leaders on the half-hour but the visitors proved too strong in the second period. Two goals in the space of nine minutes from Aleksandr Samedov and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov turned the game on its head before Dmitri Sychev's last-minute strike capped a fine night for the Russian Cup winners.

FC Groningen 1-1 ACF Fiorentina
Groningen were the better team in the first half in the Netherlands and it brought them the first goal of the game before the half-hour mark. Stefan Nÿland set up the chance with a cross from the left that Goran Lovre headed into the far corner. After the goal, Fiorentina took over the initiative with goalkeeper Brian van Loo having to save from Christian Vieri while Adrian Mutu's header just whistled passed the post. The visitors eventually drew level midway through the second half when Franco Semioli headed in.

FK Rabotnicki 1-1 Bolton Wanderers FC
A late equaliser from Abdoulaye Méïté denied Rabotnicki the biggest shock of the evening. The home side were surprisingly dominant and almost took the lead in the first minute when Jussi Jääskeläinen's clearance gave Ivan Trickovski a chance but he failed to profit. The home side went in front early in the second half when Nemanja Milisavljević found the net after Bolton had struggled to deal with a cross. But just when it seemed a famous victory was on the cards, Filip Madzovski spilled a free-kick from Nicolas Anelka and Méïté scored from close range.

FK Sarajevo 1-2 FC Basel 1893
Basel made the ideal start to the game to set them on their way to an away victory. Marco Streller was the provider as his pass found Carlitos who scored from 16 metres. The visitors had two more good chances before the break with Felipe Caicedo and Benjamin Huggel both failing to find the net. The scorer of the first goal turned architect as Carlitos found Ivan Ergić, who scored from ten metres. However the home side were thrown a lifeline in added time when Semjon Milošević converted Emir Janjoš' cross.

Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC 0-0 AIK Solna
Israeli Cup winners Hapoel Tel-Aviv had to settle for a goalless draw against AIK after failing to break the Swedish side's resistance in an entertaining first leg. The hosts enjoyed most of the possession and came closest to scoring on a humid night in Tel-Aviv when Fabio Junior rifled a shot against the AIK crossbar on the half-hour. Both sides produced some good approach play but they lacked penetration and neither keeper was really tested.

PFC Lokomotiv Sofia 1-3 Stade Rennais FC
Rennes took a huge step towards the group stage with a comfortable win at the Bulgarska Armia Stadium. The visitors took the lead shortly before half-time when Jérôme Leroy took full advantage of a defensive slip by Darko Savić. Midfielder Marcho Dafchev gave the home side some hope with a goal from a free-kick early into the second half, but Rennes continued to dominate and Bruno Cheyrou scored the second goal after a deflection from Stéphane Mbia's free-kick. Leroy's second goal of the night came in the last minute after a quick counterattack.
