Porto hoping success breeds success

FC Porto claimed their seventh European trophy with victory against SC Braga but far from the end of their journey, a look at other recent winners suggests this is just the start.

FC Porto claimed their seventh European title with victory against SC Braga on Wednesday and if other recent winners of the UEFA Europa League or the UEFA Cup before it is any guide, there is most likely more to come. In this competition it seems success breeds success – as Porto know only too well having followed their 2003 victory with UEFA Champions League glory 12 months later.

Club Atlético de Madrid – 2010
The winners of the first edition of the UEFA Europa League, Atlético defeated FC Internazionale Milano to add the UEFA Super Cup in August but their defence floundered. Eliminated after the group stage, Quique Sánchez Flores' men have fared better in the Liga and could finish as high as fifth this term, a significant improvement on last season's ninth-placed finish.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk – 2009
The Pitmen have gone from strength to strength since defeating SV Werder Bremen in Istanbul. Ukrainian champions for the past two years, they could make it a double this term by beating FC Dynamo Kyiv in the cup final next week. But it is their ability to transfer their success to the UEFA Champions League that marks Mircea Lucescu's men out – they reached the quarter-finals for the first time this season.

FC Zenit St Petersburg – 2008
Zenit followed up their victory over Rangers FC by becoming the first Russian side to lift the UEFA Super Cup, beating Manchester United FC in Monaco. They failed to attain the same heights in 2009 but the arrival of Italian Luciano Spalletti that December has brought a massive upturn in fortunes. A season that broke many records ended with a league and cup double.

Sevilla FC – 2006, 2007
Sevilla ended a 58-year trophy drought when they beat Middlesbrough FC in Eindhoven, but the wait for another title was not nearly as long. The team from Andalusia saw off FC Barcelona to clinch the UEFA Super Cup three months later, then defended their UEFA Cup crown and swiftly added the Copa del Rey. The departure of Juande Ramos stalled progress, though they claimed their fifth cup title last season.

PFC CSKA Moskva – 2005
CSKA's post-Soviet trophy cabinet contained two pieces of silverware but UEFA Cup victory over Sporting Clube de Portugal in Lisbon brought a real gold rush. Within 18 months they had completed two league and cup doubles and added further Russian Cups in 2008 and 2009. They reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2009/10.
