Burak Yılmaz and Mevlüt Erdinç scored as Turkey kept their 2014 FIFA World Cup dream alive, denting Romania's ambitions in the process.
The contest in Bucharest was 22 minutes old when Burak broke the deadlock. Romania struggled to find their rhythm despite twice hitting the frame of the goal and Mevlüt put the result beyond doubt deep into added time. Fatih Terim's charges leapfrog their opponents on goal difference into third, one point behind Hungary; the Netherlands have wrapped up top spot in Group D.
The home team's back line was sprung after just six minutes but goalkeeper Ciprian Tătărușanu repelled Burak's shot. The Galatasaray AŞ striker made no mistake 16 minutes later, however, planting a firm header beyond Tătărușanu after Cristian Tănase had struck the crossbar at the other end.
Victor Piţurcă's team refused to lie down in the second half and were again denied by the woodwork following Adrian Popa's long-range effort. Defender Dorin Goian then headed wide from inside the area and Mevlüt rubbed salt into Romania's wound by adding a second as the clock ticked down.
