Many of our colleagues took the major decision to relocate to Switzerland when joining the UEFA team – each with their own motivations, challenges and surprises. Whether moving with family, relocating for personal growth, or expanding career horizons, their experiences share one common thread: adaptation and opportunity.

We asked Alan Miller, Marcia Maclons-Martin and Nikola Vujnovic to share their personal experiences of relocating – and how UEFA supported them every step of the way.

✅ Moving to Switzerland: Practical realities

We understand that moving countries can feel overwhelming, so our comprehensive relocation programme covers temporary accommodation, guidance on housing, work permits and visas as well as practical advice for settling in.

“Fortunately for me, it's not the first time UEFA has employed someone who has needed to relocate, and in true Swiss style - everything worked seamlessly; from support with finding an apartment to shipping everything I own”

– Alan, from our marketing team

One practical tip: great accommodation is highly sought after, so choose your first apartment carefully.

“Demand for property is very high and it can be difficult to move around, so doing your homework is key to getting it right first time, and if you do get it right, you never look back”

– Alan

🇨🇭 Adapting to Swiss culture

Switzerland offers a unique rhythm of life, with a strong emphasis on work-life balance and well-being – something UEFA actively encourages.

“Seeing colleagues stand up around noon, head out for lunch and come back an hour later – that kind of midday break was completely new to me. It gives you time to breathe, connect and reset.”

– Marcia, who works in our IT team

Sports are another part of everyday life, and skiing often becomes a new hobby.

“Growing up in Serbia, skiing wasn’t common. But here, it’s a huge part of the culture. I’m still learning, but it’s something I want to embrace.”

We provide a collaborative, international environment where innovation meets tradition. Employees enjoy strategic roles, exposure to major football projects and a diverse culture made up of over 50 nationalities.

“UEFA places great importance on work-life balance. Everyone works hard and is pulling in the same direction, but taking a breath to enjoy your surroundings during the day (specifically the lunch hour) is something I never knew I needed.”

– Alan

Openness is another cultural surprise.

“At UEFA, people openly discuss everything, even topics that were off-limits in my previous roles. It was a shock, but also refreshing.”

– Marcia

🌱 Personal growth and social life

UEFA encourages continuous learning and offers development programmes, language courses and mobility opportunities. Relocation often sparks personal goals: from learning French or skiing to pursuing further education.

“I wanted to come here with a goal. I decided to study data science and analytics, and I’m absolutely loving it.”

– Marcia

For those moving alone, building a social network requires some effort, but our community events and sports activities help introduce new staff to colleagues from around the business.

“If you’re willing to make the effort, people will meet you halfway.”

– Marcia

💡 Advice for future movers

  • Do your homework on where you want to live – Nyon, Geneva and Lausanne are all close by
  • Step out of your comfort zone – Switzerland rewards commitment
  • Treat relocation as an opportunity for both professional and personal growth

“Step out of your comfort zone. Switzerland values commitment and hard work. If you bring value, it’s truly appreciated.”

– Nikola

Thinking about making the move? At UEFA, your relocation journey will be supported by a team that cares about your success, both professionally and personally.
