UEFA Champions League in numbers

With the second and final instalment of UEFA Champions League round of 16 ties concluding next week, UEFA.com rounds up some key statistics from the first legs, including why Chelsea FC and FC Internazionale Milano must improve their home form, PFC CSKA Moskva's unbeaten streak and a dramatic change of fortune for English clubs.

5: Having lost 3-1 at SSC Napoli, Chelsea must reverse their recent fortunes in UEFA Champions League knockout home matches, having not won any of the last five. Starting from the 2008/09 quarter-final their results have been: 4-4 v Liverpool FC, 1-1 v FC Barcelona (2008/09 semi-final), 0-1 v Internazionale (2009/10 round of 16), 0-0 with FC København (2010/11 round of 16) and 0-1 v Manchester United FC (2010/11 quarter-final).

3: The Blues have won six of the ten UEFA competition ties in which they have had a first-leg deficit to retrieve at Stamford Bridge, although they have failed in all three attempts to overhaul a first-leg away defeat by a two-goal margin or more. On the sole occasion they lost 3-1 away from home, AS Monaco FC earned a 2-2 draw in London in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

4:Chelsea have scored first in each of their four away games in this season's competition but have won none of them. Their loss in Naples followed defeat at Bayer 04 Leverkusen while they drew at Valencia CF and KRC Genk.

4: While Napoli have lost four of the 13 UEFA competition ties in which they won the first leg at home, they triumphed in all four in which they won by two goals in the first match, most recently against Skonto FC in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup first round (2-0 home, 1-0 away). All four of those two-goal first-leg successes came by a 2-0 scoreline.

16: It is 16 years since England did not have a representative in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, after Blackburn Rovers FC's elimination in the 1995/96 group stage. With Manchester City FC, Manchester United and Arsenal FC, despite their 3-0 win against AC Milan last week, all out, Chelsea have it all to do.

6: Pontus Wernbloom's last-gasp goal against Real Madrid CF means CSKA remain unbeaten in six outings, home and away, against Spanish opponents. Furthermore, at this stage two years ago CSKA drew 1-1 at home to Sevilla FC before winning the second leg 2-1 in Spain.

2: CSKA have prevailed in only two of the five UEFA ties in which they drew the first leg at home – both in Spain. The Sevilla success was preceded by a famous triumph at holders Barcelona in the 1992/93 second round, the Russian team winning 3-2 at the Camp Nou and 4-3 overall.

1: Madrid, however, have lost just one of nine home fixtures against Russian opposition, going down 3-1 to FC Spartak Moskva in the 1990/91 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-final. They won seven of the other eight games and were in imperious form in the group stage, scoring 13 goals as they won all three home matches.

20: Madrid have triumphed in all but one of the 21 previous UEFA competition ties in which they earned a first-leg away draw; the sole blemish came in that tie with Spartak, when they drew 0-0 away. They also drew 1-1 away in the first leg of last season's round of 16, subsequently beating Olympique Lyonnais 3-0 – one of nine ties in which the nine-time champions have drawn 1-1 away first and won on aggregate.

11: FC Bayern München have a 100% record in three games against Swiss visitors and beat FC Basel 1893 away (2-1) and home (3-0) in last term's group stage. The German giants have won 11 of their last 12 UEFA Champions League home outings, recording four straight victories this season including a 2-0 play-off success over FC Zürich.

13: Basel were undefeated on their travels in the group stage and, though they have one win, two draws and three defeats in Germany, they have won the first leg at home in 17 UEFA competition ties and gone on to record 13 aggregate victories. When they have prevailed 1-0 at home first time out they have triumphed overall on three out of four occasions.

8: While Bayern have survived after a first-leg away reverse eight times they have also suffered ten defeats in such instances, including seven of the last eight ties. The Bundesliga club have won four of the five ties in which they lost 1-0 away in the first leg although the sole defeat came in the most recent contest: AC Milan losing 2-1 in Munich in the 1989/90 European Cup semi-finals but triumphing on away goals.

3: Olympique de Marseille have now registered three straight 1-0 wins against Inter after André Ayew's late header at Stade Vélodrome. The sides met for the first time in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup, goals from Didier Drogba and Camel Meriem securing OM victories in Marseille and Milan.

2: Marseille endured some group-stage struggles at home although Inter also toiled this season; each lost twice on home turf, taking just three points compared with seven on their travels.

15: Inter have won 15 of the 28 UEFA competition ties in which they lost the first leg away from home, although they have lost five of the last six. It is a similar story when they have gone down 1-0 away in the first leg; although overall their record shows five aggregate victories and six losses, four of those defeats have come in the last five ties, most recently that Marseille reverse.

31: Inter's starting lineup in Marseille had an average age of 31 years and 331 days, the oldest in UEFA Champions League history. They broke their own record of 31 years and 317 days, set against LOSC Lille Métropole on matchday four. Ten of Marseille's XI were younger than Inter's average age, the exception being 33-year-old Souleymane Diawara.
