1986/87: Madjer inspires Porto triumph

The first Portuguese European Champion Clubs' Cup success for a quarter of a century made a legend of Algerian Rabah Madjer, who scored FC Porto's leveller against FC Bayern München before setting up the winner for Filho Juary.

In 1986/87 you had to go back a quarter of a century for Portugal's last European Champion Clubs' Cup success. But then FC Porto went and reeled in the years, surprising FC Bayern München 2-1 in the final. Artur Jorge's side bounced back from a 26th-minute Ludwig Kögl goal to dominate the Bavarian side. Yet up until that second half in Vienna, only the smartest escudos were on a Portuguese triumph.

Bayern stroll
The Dragons might have scored ten against Rabat Ajax FC in the First Round, but that counted for little against RSC Anderlecht's eye-catching defeat of holders FC Steaua Bucureşti that earned the Belgian side a place in the quarter-finals. That, incidentally, was as good as it got for Anderlecht, thrashed 5-0 in Munich in the quarter-finals.

Madrid defeated
Bayern had used autumn wins over PSV Eindhoven and FK Austria Wien as the springboard for an assault on the continent's top honour - and on paper their biggest obstacle were semi-final opponents Real Madrid CF. UEFA Cup winners the previous two seasons, the Spanish side had not lost over two legs in 15 European ties. Their away form was poor, though, and like BSC Young Boys, Juventus and FK Crvena Zvezda before them, Bayern took full advantage with a 4-1 home victory.

Futre excels
A Carlos Santillana strike was Madrid's sole reply in the return, to the dismay of a Santiago Bernabéu crowd all too used to escape acts. In fact, the Houdini routine kept for the final. Here Porto showed the form that had taken them past fancied FC Dynamo Kyiv in the semis. With Paolo Futre running riot, the Algerian Rabah Madjer levelled on 77 minutes then carved out the winning goal for substitute Filho Juary four minutes later.
